Moms in Medicine

It takes one to know one.  As doctors, no one can fully understand what we have sacrificed to get to this point unless they have walked this same road.

You have put in countless hours of schooling and training and put your life on hold to practice medicine.

You have sacrificed sleep and walked the halls of the hospital in the wee hours of the morning when a nurse calls you to check on a patient.

You have missed family events, holidays and weekends with loved ones

You have seen death and dying.  You have consoled worried parents.  You have wiped tears and given hugs.

You have seen patients at their lowest point and their highest.  You’ve celebrated their victories and encouraged them through their struggles.

At times it is emotionally exhausting and at times incredibly fulfilling.  In many ways, it parallels motherhood.

Lets face it, a career in medicine these days can be incredibly challenging.  Especially when we are juggling the ups and downs of parenting along side of it.

Moms in medicine can often times feel burned out, dissatisfied, exhausted, and overall drained.  Sadly, many extremely talented and successful doctors are walking away from this career because they feel they can’t deal with a broken health care system AND have a satisfying career.
